The Random Ramblings of An Old Soldier

Things that I find interesting, love, despise, or just think are plain old funny!!

Downsizing. ..

This reminds me of my ‘03 deployment in Samarra. We had an interpreter/get anything guy that had an awesome freaking Enduro that we used to ride all the time. Since we loved his so much, he decided we (my buddy and I) needed a couple, so he “liberated” them from our local, extremely corrupt, IP (Iraqi police)station. Yeah, that lasted all of about two days…..

Actually, this isn’t humor. It’s horror. The last thing America needs is another statist president. Bush and Obama already have done enough damage.

This is just awesome, and it really puts the size of a golden eagle in perspective!

flight-freedom asked: What are engagements like at this point? Do you meet any organized resistance or just unorganized jihadists..? Have things become more stabilized?

Its currently Ramadan so its been slow the past month. We’ve had some close calls even from sporadic small arms fire and even complex L-shaped, U-shaped ambush attacks where our truck got hit with RPGs followed by small arms fire. And who knows man, whether they are organized or not, they are all somehow linked to some sort of insurgency whether they are taliban or hired guns from Chechnya.

Funny you should ask, and you will never see this on the news, but Taliban hires insurgents and mercenaries from Chechnya and Pakistan to fight their battles. We lost one of our own last deployment to a highly skilled Chechnyian sniper and our COPs been attacked many times with accurate indirect fire from Chechnyian mortar teams. Nothing a A10 gun run can’t fix though.

After the initial invasion, a subsequent collapse of the Iraqi military, 90% of the insurgents we killed or captured in ‘03-04 were third world foreign nationals. Same thing in ‘06, most of them were Iranian, Libyan, Serb, Filipino, Chechyan, European, Saudi etc. etc.

Fun fact: In this situation, having a gun or knife or really any armament will not help you.

Fun fact in North Carolina you most likely won’t be in this situation if you do have any kind of armament especially if you’re open carrying like the law states that you can. Why do you say? Well no one wants to loose their life even criminals trying to get over on someone so if they see that you’re carrying they will always think twice about messing with you. Maybe if the rest of the country followed what North Carolina’s gun control model is maybe this country would be a better saferplace to live. Not saying that we are perfect but I can tell you that most of our shootings do not involve innocent people.

How did you know where I’m from? But yeah, deterrence is a valid point, but I’m not talking about gun control at all with this. It’s a safety tip. Hell, unless you’ve been trained in a specific draw technique, someone closer than 20 feet from you with a knife will end you.In some situations, a gun alone won’t save you. You also need a mind for how people actually think and consider tactics. Making the right choice in the right moment is more powerful than any weapon.

Deterrent, street smart.Believe it or not most all criminals will interview their prey, either from close up talking to them or at a far, watching to see if you’re easy prey.Being street smart is the first step in self-defense. If the perpetrator feel you are street smart and prepared to defend yourself odds are he will look for another target. 919bigt you’re absolutely right a firearm is one tool in self-defense and useless if not properly trained and useless if you’re not aware of your surroundings. And yes 919bigt your mind and a self-defense mindset is very important, again street smarts Condition red: FightingCondition orange: High probability of a fight.Condition yellow: Conscious of one’s surroundings.Condition white: Victim, hopefully a still alive victim.I once avoided an altercation from a aggressive punk with a hot cup of coffee and that’s the ultimate goal in self-defense, avoiding an altercation.Tip on alarming your house.Don’t forget the attached garage.Someone can gain access to your house by simply cutting the a hole in the sheetrock ceiling in the garage, crawl over the ceiling joist, get over your main dwelling and simply cut through the sheetrock and the perpetrator is in.Though all your self-defense preparation doesn’t 100% guarantee your safty, nothing will, but your odd of coming out as a Victor is greatly increased. Something I put together.http://rightsideofpolitics.tumblr.com/post/74576608602/the-gun-debateGreat discussion guys. You guys have a great day and God Bless. Wayne

Your garage example is 100% spot on. It happened to my mother when she lived in Round Rock, TX. She was in the shower when she heard a crash, and felt the house shake. She got out, grabbed a robe and her .40 S&W, and entered her living room just in time to witness someone fall through her dining room ceiling and hit the ground from 16’ up. They saw her pistol, and took off like a bat out of hell. The perp had crashed their car into her extremely heavy, solid wood barn door style garage door, gained entrance, climbed on top of her car to access the attic door etc. etc. The really messed up part? Because no one was caught immediately by the police, her insurance company refused to pay for repairs initially. Even with a police report. They (insurance company) said that they believe it was a false claim, and that she had crashed her own car through the door and concocted this complex story to cover it up. The police finally found a vehicle with her door paint on it’s smashed front end, and were able to make an arrest and get a conviction on armed robbery charges(the two perps ratted each other out, they were both carrying stolen weapons).
